Street Feet Volunteer Nominated for L’Oreal Women of Worth Award

We’ve nominated longtime volunteer, Kirsten Bourque, RN. For a 2017 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Award for her tireless dedication to ourStreet Feet Program!

Individuals who are homeless have a higher incidence of chronic diseases, notably walking and mobility as chronic health issues, and can experience multiple challenges in managing diabetes (which may result in foot/leg complications such as infection or amputation). Wait times for foot care provided by clinics can range between 6-24 months.

At Street Feet, since 2014, Kirsten provides foot care free-of-charge to street-involved individuals and people who live in the Sunshine House neighbourhood. Good luck and fingers crossed!

Sunshine House Welcomes Artist in Residence, Leigh-Anne Kehler

b-and-w-head-shot

Sunshine House is happy to welcome Artist Leigh-Anne Kehler as the Collaborating Artist for the Winnipeg Arts Council’s WITH ART program.

Leigh-Anne will be working with participants from all drop-in programs at Sunshine House over the course of 18 months in order to develop a narrative of experience to be later shared with the public. The ensuing art piece is slated to be complete Winter 2018.

Leigh-Anne Kehler is a professional storyteller, playwright, screenwriter, actor, and arts in education specialist. Her one-woman shows have toured Nationally and Internationally and garnered rave reviews. Northern Light Theatre (Edmonton), Theatre Projects Manitoba, and Prairie Theatre Exchange’s Carol Shields Festival have commissioned her for various stage works. When she’s not touring and telling personal and traditional tales or training teachers to use spoken word and drama in the every day classroom she is writing, producing, and performing. She believes that stories are the key to understanding our differences and appreciating our similarities.

This is Sunshine House’s second time participating in the WAC program, the first being a collaboration with local filmaker, Jim Agapito. The result of this was a feature documentary which can be seen here.
