With great sadness, we announce the passing of Sunshine House Elder Kelly Houle.
She was connected with the House from its early days, and was instrumental as Granny Kelly during the first five years of the Like That program. She was one of the leaders who organized the first and subsequent Two-Spirit Pow Wows. In the last three years, she sat on numerous committees at the House and was the go-to Granny at the Mobile Overdose Prevention Site (MOPS).
Kelly taught us all so much. She was sharp and funny and brought so many people through Sunshine House’s doors. She showed us what care can look like and we already miss her terribly.
A sacred fire is being held starting Friday, February 23 until noon on Tuesday, February 27 at the North End Women's Centre, 394 Selkirk Ave. All who knew her are welcome to attend (please bring your own chair). We welcome those who are able to serve as fire keepers.
We are accepting gifts of money to provision the event, as well as donations of untreated firewood, which can be brought to 394 Selkirk Ave.
Sunshine House drop-in (including Like That) will be closed Friday through Wednesday, inclusive. We will reopen on Thursday, February 29. MOPS will be open regular hours.
